The new privacy act is nothing new to us. Watkinson Agencies Ltd. it has always been, and will continue to be, our practice to protect the confidentiality of your personal information.
Why do we collect personal information? When you first become a client or have insurance policies with us, we need to collect personal information. Common purposes: 1) Enable us to apply for or maintain an insurance policy for you 2) provide information or quotes on a product or service 3) ensure your information is accurate and up-to-date and 4) protect us both against error.
What personal information do we collect? Depending on the purpose(s) {types of insurance you are applying for} we need to collect information such as your name, address, telephone numbers, date of birth, smoking and marital status, medical information, employment and/or the organization you are with, financial information and any information required to complete an application for insurance.
Who do we disclose your information to? For many of the purposes identified above, we will need to share your personal information with others in order to serve your needs. These other parties commonly include but are not limited to the insurance company for which you have requested a policy, and our employees and/or agents.
How we protect your personal information? In order to protect your personal information and your right to privacy, we will: not collect, use or disclose your personal information for any purpose other than for the purpose for which it was collected, unless it is required by law to protect our/your interests (IEā¦Fraud) or to determine eligibility for an insurance benefit. We will keep your personal information only for as long as we need it to fulfill the stated purpose or as required by law. We will maintain your personal information in an accurate, complete and up-to-date form, safeguard your information to the best of our ability, and respond to any request you make to access or correct the information we hold. We do rely on you to advise us of any changes in your situation.
Consent? We may obtain your express consent or we may determine the consent has been implied by the circumstances. We might ask you for your express consent over the telephone or in writing. We may determine that by seeking insurance through us, your consent has been implied to deal with your personal information in a reasonable manner. There are legal exceptions in which we will not need to obtain your consent or explain purposes or use or disclosure of personal information, such as emergency situations if it is necessary for your protection or ours.
You can refuse to allow us to obtain, use or share your personal information or you could withdraw a previously given consent at any time. However, by doing that, depending on the situation, you may be limiting or even preventing our ability to provide you with a quote, insurance coverage or other services you desire.
